Fuminori Fukami

Fuminori Fukami (b. 1980, Seto, Aichi Prefecture) is a Japanese ceramic artist working in Seto, one of Japan's principal centres of ceramic production. He graduated from the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Technology Training School in 2000 and studied under the ceramicist Kenjin Kishimoto for four years from 2001, before establishing his own studio in 2005. Fukami works chiefly in Oribe, Kiseto and Shino — glaze traditions rooted in the Mino-Seto region. He is best known for what he calls "Manga Oribe": Oribe-glazed vessels densely covered, edge to edge, with figures and animals drawn in a manga-influenced line, often adapted from historical sources such as Hokusai's sketchbooks and the ukiyo-e prints of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. A related body of work, "Shunga Oribe," extends the same approach to erotic ukiyo-e imagery. His work has been selected for the Tokai Traditional Crafts Exhibition and the Contemporary Tea Pottery Exhibition, and received the Chairman's Prize at the Seto City Art Exhibition.
