This bowl belongs to Fuminori Fukami's Manga Oribe, and its character is carried especially by the direct contact between glaze and drawing on its surface. The body is finished in Oribe-type glaze — saturated green and orange in the tradition's characteristic palette — over which Fukami applies black graphic line drawn from manga and ukiyo-e sources including Hokusai Manga and imagery associated with Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Rather than sitting as flat decoration, the drawing responds to the irregular, hand-formed profile beneath it: colour pools and shifts with the glaze's own behaviour in the kiln, and the black line has to negotiate ridges, folds and asymmetries that a smoother, wheel-thrown surface would not present. Glaze, clay, foot and rim remain visible throughout, so the historic ceramic object is never fully replaced by the picture painted onto it — instead, the saturated Oribe colour and the graphic manga line continue to read as two distinct materials occupying, and responding to, the same worked surface.
