As a vessel within Fuminori Fukami's Manga Oribe, this piece is shaped by process as much as by image. The form is built with the deliberately irregular profile associated with historic Oribe ware, worked by hand rather than resolved into a symmetrical, wheel-turned shape, and finished with layered applications of Oribe-type glaze before figurative and graphic decoration is hand-rendered onto the fired surface. That decoration draws on manga and ukiyo-e sources, including Hokusai Manga and prints connected to Utagawa Kuniyoshi, reworked by Fukami into black line and saturated colour that has to follow the vessel's own irregular curves rather than a flat picture plane. Because the ceramic form is asymmetrical to begin with, no two views of the vessel present the image the same way, and the viewer has to move around the object to read it in full — a continuation, through layered process rather than imitation, of the historic Oribe tradition's acceptance of distortion as an expressive quality.
