This vessel is part of Fuminori Fukami's Manga Oribe, a series built across the traditional functional range of Oribe ceramics — sake bottles, cups, tea bowls and pouring vessels among them — each reworked to carry imagery sourced from manga and ukiyo-e prints, including Hokusai Manga and pictures associated with Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Fukami treats these historic vessel types not as neutral supports but as active partners for the image: the irregular form and strong colour long associated with Oribe ware sets the visual terms, and the drawing has to work with, rather than against, an already asymmetrical, expressive ceramic body. Across the group, the historic object is never displaced by the picture — glaze, clay, foot, rim and deliberate deformation remain fully present alongside the black line and saturated colour of the drawing. In that sense this vessel continues a centuries-old ceramic lineage through collision with contemporary graphic imagery, rather than through direct imitation of either historical source on its own.

Manga Oribe operates simultaneously as pottery, illustration and contemporary visual culture — a continuation of Japanese ceramic history achieved not through imitating either Oribe ware or ukiyo-e directly, but through their collision on a single vessel.
