As a vase within Shinya Tanoue's Shell Series, this work is built around the relationship between a closed, protective exterior and the opening that a vase form requires by definition. The outer body carries the series' dense, radiating incised lines, developed through repeated carved and scraped marks into a restrained, matte skin — the same language Tanoue draws from eggshells, seashells and seed husks as containers of latent life. Where that exterior stays closed and textured, the vase's mouth opens directly into an interior finished in a luminous blue glaze, so the vessel's functional opening becomes the series' central image made literal: containment giving way to emergence. Held between large sculptural vessels and small cups in the wider Shell Series, this vase sits at a scale where the shell's logic of protection and growth can be read clearly through both touch and use.
