Shinya Tanoue's Shell Series takes the shell itself as its guiding image: a structure that protects life while preparing it for the next stage. Across the group, hand-built stoneware bodies pair a restrained, densely incised exterior with an interior opened into a luminous blue glaze, holding protection and emergence in the same form.

Part of Shinya Tanoue's Shell Series, this hand-built stoneware work belongs to a body of ceramics built around the shell as both protective structure and threshold to new life. Tanoue draws on eggshells, seashells and seed husks as a sculptural vocabulary — forms that contain and protect while holding open the possibility of birth, growth and transformation. Across the series, densely worked exterior surfaces are developed through repeated carved and scraped lines, restrained and matte, while the interior opens into a luminous field of blue glaze. That contrast between a closed, textured skin and an open, saturated interior is the series' central tension: stillness against energy, containment against release. The group spans several scales and functions, from large sculptural vessels and flower vases to pouring vessels and small cups, all sharing this same enclosed-yet-opening logic.
