This plate is part of Kodai Ujiie's broader practice, in which the ceramic surface is treated as an active field of fracture, colour and material change rather than a stable, decorated ground. Ujiie has described existence not as a completed state but as a continuous process of change, and that idea runs through the surface here: cracks, irregular edges and unstable glaze structures are left visible rather than corrected, so the object appears to record an ongoing transformation rather than presenting a single, finished moment. The resulting surface can suggest skin, mineral deposit, dried earth or biological tissue, fragile and resilient at once. Ujiie's documented practice includes vividly coloured, abstract ceramics with strongly crazed glaze and, at times, lacquer-based interventions related to kintsugi, and recent exhibitions have focused increasingly on skin, body, irregularity and transformation as connected themes.
